What Are You Hanging Out For?
Whether it's the anticipation of the weekend, the next invoice paid or paycheck, a fresh haircut, or the completion of a project, we humans are always looking ahead, seeking something to look forward to. This innate drive to set goals and aspire for more distinguishes us from other living beings on Earth, as we consciously strive to improve our lives beyond basic needs.
I recently encountered some of these challenges. Despite being clear about my goal and knowing the necessary steps to achieve it, I found myself hesitating, not taking action, and even engaging in counterproductive behaviors. So I called on the assistance of an exceptional coach, who I am fortunate to have as both a friend and professional peer also work in personalised health and performance. Together, we unearthed the real issues that despite me doing the same work for others I couldnt do for myself. We discovered that there was a conflict between my aspirations and my values and beliefs regarding what was truly necessary for success.
My side of the conversation went like this:
Mastery gives self belief and credibility……...If I don’t have mastery…….I’m not of use
(What do you believe about mastery?)
I need to be the master before I begin….. If I’m not the master, I am an imposter………This would go against my value of Authenticity.
…….Making mistakes means I have failed and I am not a master, I’m an imposter……
(What else could making mistakes mean?)
……….
I could have made a better choice
I wasted my energy, I let myself and others down…...
I am creating opportunities to ask for help and contributing to the purpose
I can learn from someone and improve / learn a new skill
I am growing
I am adapting and developing
I am moving, taking action and I’m alive
I’ve challenged myself to grow - success - MASTERY….Yessssss
We are complex beings. Our motivations, choices and drives are determined by our biological needs, our unconscious and conscious self and our circumstances.
But I dont want to take up your time sharing about me, rather here are some encouraging words for you from others taking action in their life:
